The Secrets of Their Success
The Mexican contemporary dance group Delfos performed in Austin last week. It was a treat to host co-artistic director Claudia LaVista as a guest lecturer in my Dance History class.
Claudia told us the tale of how Delfos developed into an international touring company after a gutsy move from Mexico City, the generally accepted center of Mexican modern dance, to the coastal town of Mazatlan.
It was a risk, and the risk paid off.
In Mazatlan Delfos has built a base of supporters who provide space, salaries, and even long-term hotel stays for visiting companies.
The secret of the company’s success?
I’ve gathered here the four core principles that Claudia shared with us:
First, envision what you want to create. And find people who share that vision.
Second, focus on that vision. Focus, focus, focus.
Third, be ready and willing to shift your perspective. Reconsider your assumptions about things like where you should be located.
Finally, always listen to your still, small voice. It has something important to tell you.
