Established in 1977, the American Arts Alliance is a nationwide consortium
of nonprofit performing, presenting, and exhibiting arts organizations.
The mission of the Alliance is to be the principal advocate for America's
professional nonprofit arts organizations and their publics in representing
arts interests and advancing arts support before Congress and other branches
of the federal government. To achieve this mission, the Alliance
informs legislators and policy makers of the vital role of the arts in
American society and advocates the development of national policies that
recognize, enhance, and foster the contributions that the arts make to
America.
American
Assembly
The American Assembly, an affiliate of Columbia University, was founded
by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1955 to "illuminate issues of
public policy." Dwight D. Eisenhower envisioned The Assembly as a
nonpartisan setting for people with divergent interests, points of view,
backgrounds, and perspectives, but all with an interest in a single issue,
to come together and find out what they share, what they agree on, and
how they can work together. Through structured discussions, commissioned
research, meetings, and publications, The American Assembly conferences
provide a singular venue for examining and shaping the formulation of
sustainable public policy for the arts and culture sector and for developing
the kinds of responsible recommendations that this nation requires.
Americans for
the Arts
Americans for the Arts is the nation's leading nonprofit organization
for advancing the arts in America. With a 40-year record of objective
arts industry research, they are dedicated to representing and serving
local communities and creating opportunities for every American to participate
in and appreciate all forms of the arts. The organization focuses on three
primary goals: 1) increasing public and private sector support for the
arts, 2) ensuring that every American child has access to a high-quality
arts education, and 3) strengthening communities through the arts. The
National Arts Policy Database is a comprehensive research/resource
tool containing approximately 7,000 items published since 1960.
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts
Paper Series
on the Arts, Culture and Society
The Foundation's project on the arts, culture, and society exists
to ensure public debate about the global, economic, and societal forces
affecting the arts. The foundation has published a series of 12 papers
exploring the rise of economic and cultural globalizations and the way
in which art institutions have accommodated the phenomenon.
Animating
Democracy Initiative
The Animating Democracy Initiative (ADI), launched in fall 1999,
is a four-year programmatic initiative whose purpose is to foster artistic
activity that encourages civic dialogue on important contemporary issues.
The Initiative seeks to do this through an integrated set of program components
including: 1) Publication of the study Animating Democracy: The
Artistic Imagination as a Force in Civic Dialogue, reports, and other
field resources; 2) The Animating Democracy Lab, designed to identify
and strengthen exemplary arts-based civic dialogue projects sponsored
by arts and cultural institutions through financial and advisory support;
3) An interactive web site and searchable database to centralize extensive
information on arts-based civic dialogue; 4) National convenings to share
learning resulting from the Animating Democracy Initiative.

Arts4AllPeople
Arts4AllPeople is a resource for anyone or any group dedicated to the
arts and culture who wishes to share or gain better insight into successful
ways to build and enhance audience participation. The site was designed
to facilitate the exchange of new research, concrete ideas, and "best
practices" to promote service to people as integral to the health
of arts institutions and to the life of their communities. The Research
& Resources section is designed to bring you the most current thinking,
information, and practices on building public participation in the arts
and culture.

Tools for Arts Advocate
Arts on the Line(AOTL) is about citizen empowerment, dedicated
to connecting any citizen interested in strengthening relationships between
artists, educators, and the business, public, private, for-profit, and
non-profit sectors of society with the resources that will help to empower
them. AOTL aims to give surfers quick and easy access to the best of this
information as well as access to original materials that might help in
making the case for stronger and more vibrant arts communities.

Resources

Centre
for Creative Communities
Established in Britain in1978, the Centre for Creative Communities
is an independent charity with extensive national and international experience.
It works in arts and education, cultural exchanges, and urban regeneration,
promoting the building of creative and sustainable communities, where
creativity and learning have pivotal roles in personal, social, and cultural
development.
Community Arts Network
The Community Arts Network (CAN) project promotes information exchange,
research, and critical dialogue within the field of community-based arts,
that is, art made as a voice and a force within a specific community of
place, spirit, or tradition. The CAN web site includes the following elements:
1) APInews, a newsletter; 2) The CAN Reading Room; 3) CAN recommended
links; and 4) CAN Conversations, a place to share your thoughts. The CAN
archive is a repository of historic documents from the field of community-based
arts.
CAN’s newest resource is Working Methods. It provides you with the tools for constructing, conducting, documenting, and evaluating effective community arts programs.
Creative City Network of Canada
The Creative City Network is comprised of people employed by municipalities across Canada working on arts, culture, and heritage policy, planning, development, and support. Its website offers news, event listings, resources, listserves, directories, city profiles, and job opportunities. You can subscribe to a weekly news digest, as well. Of special interest: “Nurturing Culture and Creativity to build Community” and “Making the Case for Culture”.
Cultural Policy & the Arts National Data Archive (CPANDA)
CPANDA is an interactive digital archive of policy-relevant data on the arts and culture. It features a data archive, quick facts, research guides, and links to other resources. The project is a collaborative effort of Princeton University Library and the Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies.
Culturelink
Culturelink (the Network of Networks for Research and Cooperation in Cultural Development) was established by UNESCO and the Council of Europe in 1989. Its mission is to strengthen communication and to encourage international and intercultural communication and collaboration. The long-term objective is the development of a world-wide information system for the study of cultural development and cooperation. To that end, the network collects, processes, and disseminates information on cultural development, cultural life, and policies. The Culturelink database features a cultural policy database, a cultural development database, and a resource page linking to world-wide cultural e-resources.
Dance
Advance
Dance Advance is a program designed for project-based work, sponsoring
a range of initiatives that cultivates artistic excellence and understanding
of dance in the Philadelphia region. Dance Advance is designed to support
Philadelphias remarkable range of dance forms as well as the infrastructure
that makes possible a diverse dance environment. Dance Advance seeks to
contribute, in specific, project based, and professional development capacities,
to the cultivation of an artistically dynamic environment for dance.
Dance Heritage Coalition
The Dance Heritage Coalition was founded in 1992. It focuses on four areas:
access to materials; the continuing documentation of dance employing both
traditional methods and developing technologies; preservation of existing
documentation; and education regarding methods, standards, and practice
for access, documentation, and preservation.

A leading voice in international arts marketing and audience development, this free online resource assists arts professionals to reach their marketing potential. It is an invaluable resource for articles, trend reports, case studies, how-to guides, an e-journal, and online forums about strategic planning, audience development, promotion, sales, and leadership.
Grantmakers in the Arts
Since its founding in 1985, Grantmakers in the Arts (GIA) has been
the only national organization focusing on philanthropy in the arts and
culture. GIA aims to: 1) strengthen the field of private sector arts grantmaking
by improving communication through information
exchange and peer learning within the field as a whole; 2) increase
the presence of arts philanthropy within the broader foundation and policy
making communities, thereby promoting more meaningful support of arts
and culture; 3) support individual arts grantmakers in increasing their
effectiveness and their capacity to meet their objectives.
Hessenius Group
This blog is modeled on PBS's "McLaughlin Group." Each month, five to seven leaders in the cultural sector post their thoughts on current policy issues. The blog is open for public response.
Imagining
America
Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life is a national
consortium of colleges, universities, and cultural institutions dedicated
to supporting the civic work of university artists, humanists, and designers.
Its mission is to facilitate a national coalition of artists, humanities
and civic groups working at this intersection of higher education and
community life. Imagining America supports campus-community projects and
seeks to facilitate structural enhancements within universities that promote
new levels of engagement among artists, scholars, and their American communities.
LINC
Leveraging Investments in the Arts includes an inventory of research related to its mission: to improve conditions for artists in all disciplines, so that artists can more readily do their creative work and contribute to community life. The site also summarizes the Urban Institute's 2003 report, "Investing in Creativity."
Marketplace: The Business
of the Arts
The arts in America are big business and have a major impact on our
communities, cities, regions and our nation. Arts institutions contribute
a large amount of money to the economy and can serve as a catalyst for
change in communities. The purpose of Marketplaces Business of the
Arts Desk is to explore these roles.

Assembly of State Arts Agencies
The National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) is the membership
organization of the nation's state and jurisdictional arts agencies. NASAA's
mission is to advance and promote a meaningful role for the arts in the
lives of individuals, families, and communities throughout the United
States. We empower state arts agencies through strategic assistance that
fosters leadership, enhances planning and decision-making, and increases
resources.
National Endowment for
the Arts
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) provides national recognition
and support to significant projects of artistic excellence, thus preserving
and enhancing our nation's diverse cultural heritage. The NEA was created
by Congress and established in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal
government.
New England Foundation
for the Arts
The New England Foundation for the Arts features three funds (Creation
and Presentation, Culture in Community, and Connections) that support
the creation and distribution of new work in the arts, the linking of
culture with community development, and the advancement of the cultural
field through research and technology.
New York Public Library
Dance Collection
This premier research catalog lists works about all forms of dance, from
all cultures, in print and other media. It includes materials in many
languages and serves as an index to an international range of dance periodicals.

The Arts and Cultural Policy Initiative is committed to basic
research, theory building, and the development of information resources
(including databases) for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners.
The Pew
Charitable Trusts
The Pew Charitable Trusts support nonprofit activities in the
areas of culture, education, the environment, health and human services,
public policy and religion. Based in Philadelphia, the Trusts make strategic
investments that encourage and support citizen participation in addressing
critical issues and effecting social change. The Culture program aims
to assure that our nation's cultural resources are properly sustained
and contribute to the health of our democratic society.

The Princeton University Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies
was created to improve the clarity, accuracy, and sophistication of discourse
about the nation's artistic and cultural life. Its programs and activities
are designed to create an infrastructure of well-trained scholars who
have access to regularly collected information about cultural organizations,
activities, and providers and who produce timely research and analysis
on key topics in arts and cultural policy. The site features more than 30 publications as well as meeting reports, course syllabi, ongoing research, and the Cultural Policy and the Arts National Data Archive.
Social Enterprise Alliance
This membership organization is devoted exclusively to building sustainable nonprofits through earned income strategies. It is a network that connects entrepreneurial nonprofits with learning opportunities, technical assistance, and other resources. Members include nonprofit practitioners, grantmakers, technical consultants, for-profit businesses, and academics.
UNESCO
UNESCO assists members of the United Nations in updating their cultural policies as they relate to culture and its larger role in development. Promoting cultural diversity is a top priority.

Service
The Arts Extension Service (AES) is a national nonprofit arts
service that connects arts and communities with learning. It works to
achieve access to and integration of the arts in communities through continuing
education for artists, arts organizations, and community leaders. The site's publications include: practical books, work kits, directories, and resources for arts managers, artists, and community cultural leaders. Online articles consider issues such as coalition-building and cultural planning.

Community Arts Studies
The Institute for Community Arts Studies (ICAS) promotes and implements
research, professional education, and community programs concerned with
public understanding of the arts in a broad context. Current emphases
include studies in community arts and cultural policy. The ICAS on-line
serves as an electronic forum for current community arts and cultural
policy issues. CultureWork:
A Periodic Broadside for Arts and Culture Workers is an electronic
publication that provides timely workplace-oriented information on culture,
the arts, education, and community.

Since 1994, the Social Impact of the Arts Project has undertaken
a variety of policy research projects on the role that cultural institutions
play in the metropolitan Philadelphia region and its neighborhoods.

Founded in 1969, the Bolz Center for Arts Administration is a multidisciplinary
teaching and research center that strives to support and advance the education

Indicators in Community Building Project
The Urban Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan policy research
and educational organization established to examine the social, economic,
and governance problems facing the nation. The Arts and Culture Indicators
in Community Building Project (ACIP) is an exploratory and experimental
effort to develop arts and culture neighborhood indicators for use in
local planning, policymaking, and community building.
