Workshops for Artists

Ann Daly

“When attendees say the experience was ‘truly outstanding’ and ‘potentially life-changing,’ you know you have a winner.”
— Maria Coldwell, Executive Director, Early Music America

These workshops for artists aim to develop skills for success. They are intensive and highly interactive, suitable for independent artists, arts organizations, and arts administrators working in any art form. The workshops are contracted nationally and internationally by professional associations (American Institute of Architecture Austin, Early Music America, Arts Midwest), funding programs (Australia Council for the Arts, Dance Advance), and private groups. Specializing in the arts and creative professions, Ann Daly is a consultant and coach based in Austin, Texas.

"Ann was open-minded, quick, articulate,
and most generous in the ways
she drew us into the learning process.
I can't remember the last time
I learned so much in such a short time."
— Deborah Hay, choreographer

Leading for Innovation

This highly interactive workshop focuses on leadership as action. We will focus on the three primary elements of arts leadership: Vision, Strategy, and People. Through reflective exercises and group discussion, participants will learn how to: communicate vision, deploy different types of power, move from tactical to strategic action, leverage human resources, and inhabit the role of change agent.

The Artist’s Practical Guide to Project Evaluation

This half-day workshop cuts through the theoretical complexities of project evaluation. Artists will learn a straightforward system for designing the assessment plans that are routinely required by grant applications. I will walk you through the basics, provide you with an evaluation planning guide, and help you to outline a plan of your own.

No One Chooses “Brand X”: How to Stand Out in the Crowd

Do your prospective audiences, collectors, and clients know what’s different about your work? Do you know how to tell them? A distinct brand identity will position you apart from the rest of the field, but it’s often a challenge for artists to clearly assess and communicate their own unique value. In this three-hour workshop I’ll lead you through a brisk-paced set of exercises that will help you to identify and articulate the core elements of your brand.

Develop the Audience You Want

This full-day workshop focuses on the increasing significance of the audience in today’s arts world. You will learn what audiences are looking for in an arts experience as well as a framework for developing your audience and a five-step breakdown of the process.

The Irresistible Proposal

In today’s economy, it’s more challenging than ever to win grants in the arts. In order to succeed, it’s not enough for a proposal to be good. It has to be irresistible. This three-hour workshop provides you with a framework for conceiving and articulating project proposals that can’t be refused. You will learn the five basic principles of shaping an irresistible proposal.

Strategic Planning

After you’ve defined the destination, how do you map the trip? Planning strategically, rather than acting on-the-fly, is the best way to achieve your goals. Whether you’re a solo practitioner or part of an organization, this step-by-step breakdown of the strategic planning process will help you to chart your route to success.

How to Write a Mission Statement that Succeeds

There are no shortcuts. Having — and working — a clear, specific mission statement is your single most important tool for building the career or organization of your dreams. It is your compass to success. In this three-hour workshop you will learn how to create a more purposeful and effective mission statement.

“A direct, powerful cut-through-the-crap look
at visionary leadership. I loved that Ann offered
both significant perspectives on
and practical strategies for
rising to the challenge.”
— Kurt Daw, Dean of Creative Arts
San Francisco State University

“What I liked best about your workshop
was how you listened. You listened
‘in between the lines.’ Many people can
talk, but few really listen.”
— Alan Wingard, Dean
Shorter College School of the Arts

"Ann genuinely engages her audience.
She draws us in with her wise words
and prompts us to ask the challenging questions
that have the power to propel us forward."
— Carolyn Nishon
National Performing Arts Convention

“You created a supportive, responsive environment
for participants to reflect and
gain valuable insights into audience development.
Your energy and commitment were greatly appreciated.”
— Rosalind Richards, Dance Board Manager
Australia Council for the Arts

“Your workshop was an ‘Aha!’ moment
for many of our attendees.
You gave them the opportunity to stop and
give thought to the way they do business and
the way they think about what they do.”
— Sally Fly, Executive Director
American Institute of Architects Austin

“Ann is dynamic, amusing, engaging and
well-organized, cogent, incisive.
She knows the questions to ask!
I had a ball in the workshop.
It gave me so much to think about and
quite possibly revolutionized my thoughts about performing.”
— Paula Fagerberg, musician

“Ann’s workshops are engaging and
personable. She provides clear, concise,
and valuable information. And she leaves
artists motivated and inspired.”
— Katie West, Director
